Plastic-Free Plumbing Pipe Options for Drinking Water

Quick answer

Quick answer

If you want to reduce plastic contact in a home's drinking-water system, the main practical options are metal pipework systems such as copper or stainless steel.

Ridgeline is not "plastic-free" as a physical product because it has an outer protective sleeve. But the drinking-water path is 316L stainless steel, not plastic. That distinction matters for clients who care specifically about what the water touches.

Define The Goal Clearly

"Plastic-free plumbing" can mean different things:

  • no plastic water-contact surface
  • no plastic pipe body
  • no plastic fittings
  • reduced plastic packaging
  • reduced use of plastic across the whole installation

The most relevant plumbing question is usually the first one: what material is in direct contact with the drinking water?

Main Options

Option Water-contact surface Notes
Copper Copper Familiar, rigid, joint-heavy in complex routes
Stainless steel Stainless steel Strong option for corrosion resistance and metal water path
PEX Plastic Approved systems are common, but the water path is plastic
MLCP Plastic inner layer Composite structure, usually proprietary fitting system
Push-fit plastic Plastic Very fast for repairs and simple domestic work

Why Ridgeline Is Different

Ridgeline tube uses corrugated 316L stainless steel as the water-contact surface. The outer sleeve protects the outside of the tube but is not the drinking-water path.

That makes Ridgeline a useful answer for projects where the customer asks:

  • Can I avoid plastic touching my drinking water?
  • Can I still have a flexible system?
  • Can I reduce fittings behind the wall?
  • Can I use one system for hot, cold, heating and heat-pump routes?

Be Careful With Absolute Claims

It is better to say "no plastic surface in contact with the drinking water" than to say "plastic-free installation".

A complete plumbing system may still include valves, seals, appliances, tap components or other materials. The strongest claim is the precise one: Ridgeline's tube water path is 316L stainless steel.
