Ridgeline tube is manufactured from 1.4404 (316L) marine-grade austenitic stainless steel, conforming to BS/EN 10088. We chose 316L deliberately, and we use it across the whole range. Plumbing, Underfloor, and Flexis.
There are two reasons it sits a step above the more common 304 grade in a water context. First, 316L contains 2–3% molybdenum, which gives it materially better resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. UK domestic water is generally low-chloride, but a pipe lives in a building for fifty-plus years, and contact with screed, plaster, cement, and the occasional damp wall environment all introduce chlorides over time. The molybdenum addition is a long-game decision.
Second, the "L" designation means low carbon (≤0.03%). Lower carbon means much better resistance to intergranular corrosion at and around any heat-affected zone introduced during manufacturing. It is the grade specified for hygienic-process pipework in pharma, food, and brewing for the same reason.
In practice, 316L is the same family of stainless that is specified for marine fittings, surgical instruments, and the inside of premium water bottles. If it holds up in seawater and inside the human body, the inside of a UK plumbing system is a benign environment by comparison.
